Snow White – the musical | The Disentangler

The tangle

This is one of the many major theater productions I’ve worked on. There are some magical moments in the story, and the producers got stuck on how to do this through technical effects. As a result, the musical lacked the necessary magic. The professional team had enough knowledge to build professionaly, but lacked the knowledge about the world of illusions.

Because no ready-made illusions could be bought, I was asked to come up with a number of effects, design them, and help build them. I started by making a project handbook with all the wishes and requirements for the effects. This resulted in a list of effects for which I was allowed to come up with solutions.

The disentangling

The story contains magical moments that I have translated into technical illusion solutions. We could visually transform someone into the witch, and we could suck the witch in a large mirror, after which she could be seen as a character in the mirror. The prince appeared from the fairy tale book. And Snow White stepped out of a real painting, of which we could also make her image disappear with clever techniques.

I designed all these effects in 3D and then I managed the building process with the construction team, and practiced the effects with the players in the theater.
